Week 3: Immersion - Be there, and that is the only place you need to be

Do you remember these?

This one is from Flikr, but they were a part of a whole series of books called Magic Eye where images were to pop out from the pages.  What did you see in this one? I could never get those to work.  I was not one of the cool kids to have the image pop out at me, to where I would jump back.  To be able to do these you had to fully engage yourself into the process of extracting the image.  You had to stop all other processes and focus just on bring the image out.  This is just like Dave Burgess is talking about on the second point of PIRATE

Immersion

For the rest of this post I decided to do something a little different, I made a vlog (video blog) about this topic.  So please watch, think, and then respond.  Remember you can respond via a tweet, the comments below, or via this Google Form.  Be sure to include the #SummerTLAP so that we can all see your thoughts. Secondly, if you are a WISD employee the form must be completed.

Good luck, I look forward to hearing and learning from you all.

P.S. The image was supposed to be a shark, I couldn't see it but may someone did.

  1. When I think of immersion I think of "all in". I can be "all in" a lot of ways and I try hard to live my life with that principle daily. When my sister was sick with cancer we use to always say "every day is a gift". A gift is something you unwrap and when you do there is an excitement, anticipation, wonder, and awe moment. To me to immerse myself fully is to do just that with each thing, each moment. I should show excitement if I get to be in the presence of my hubby, my kids, my students. I wasn't promised that day to be with them, so I should embrace it for all it's worth. I should anxiously await that next moment and throw myself into it again when given the gift, and I should wonder and reflect on each precious moment... Each breathe, if you will , because again, it wasn't promised! And I need to remind myself of the "awe". The beauty, the opportunity, the moment! You don't ever get them back, so they need to be savored and fully enjoyed. To me, that's immersion! I want to fully embrace and go all in! I may never get "that" moment back with my students. We don't know where they are when they come in each day. God may have put together just the right ingredients "that" day to make something amazing happen. If I'm not fully immersed and focused, I could miss my one best moment! Each day is a gift! I spent myself and my moments immersed in my sister when she was sick. I have no regrets because I fully gave to her everything I had to give. I want to be able to say the same with my students. I pray that I never let a gift, a breath, a moment go by!

  2. When I think of immersion I think of music. I have a passion for writing music, singing songs, and playing the piano. If tough times occur I normally find myself in front of a piano writing down lyrics describing my feelings. The songs are not perfect or even enjoyable to hear but it allows me that relief to overcome the obstacle I'm facing. Also, when I think of immersion I think of conversation. When someone speaks whether a student or adult I put my full attention to what they are saying. I feel by doing so allows that person to feel respected. For example, the other evening on my way to CaliforniaWhen I think of immersion I think of music. I have a passion for writing music, singing songs, and playing the piano.
